Men rule ladies from multiple points of view it turns out to be difficult to recognize one type of mistreatment from another. In the film Sleeping With the Enemy, a young lady fights every day with an oppressive, tyrannical spouse. In spite of the fact that the outside world may see Laura's life as great, the watcher sees every bit of relevant information. Laura's ideal life comprises of an alluring, affluent spouse who might do anything for her-even slaughter. They live in a lovely manor on the coast, and Laura doesn't need to work on the off chance that she so picks. Consistently Laura is tormented and scorned and censured by her significant other. Her significant other, Martin Burns, is fixated on keeping the family in flawless condition. In the event that one towel is off the mark, one can faulty in the cabinet, or if supper is somewhat late, Laura gets an extreme beating. The main path for Laura to escape from her oppressive spouse is by arranging her own demise. Laura takes her better half and neighbor out on a boat one blustery night to execute her arrangement of getaway. She "falls" off the pontoon and swims to shore. Her better half accepts that Laura passes on adrift on the grounds that she was unable to swim. Furtively, however, Laura had been taking swimming exercises at the YWCA so as to encourage her arrangement. In the wake of gathering a little sack with some close to home things and cash, Laura Burns forsakes her injurious spouse and deserts her hopeless life. Along these lines starts Laura Burns' new life as Sara Waters. She changes her name, area, circumstance, and is renewed. In Laura's new life, she works at a library and begins to date once more. As Sara, she can appreciate life and be free. Sara reconstructs her confidence, can invest more energy with her mom, and can unwind without fearing whether the racks in the kitchen will fulfill her significant other's guidelines. The getaway appeared to be idiot proof, until Martin found a bit of proof that demonstrates Laura is as yet alive. (Laura had tossed her wedding band in the latrine and Martin at last observes it.) After long stretches of looking, Martin can chase down his better half. He feels that on the off chance that he can't have her, at that point nobody will. Sara wouldn't like to come back to the awful abusive way of life she was caught in previously. Rather than surrendering her new life, she shoots the "intruder" in her home and stops her better half's rule of fear over her.... ...normal and infrequently detailed. Recollections of these encounters frequently become smothered in view of the individual embarrassment and disgrace ladies feel about the circumstance. Notice that, in the film, Laura never looks for legitimate reprisal for Martin's maltreatment, all she needs to do is escape. Sexual maltreatment and spousal maltreatment are mentally destroying for ladies on the grounds that these are demonstrations that cause sentiments of blame upon the person in question. It is time after time that a female assault casualty will do nothing since she feels mindful. In the start of the film, when Laura was exposed to day by day maltreatment from her significant other, she most likely began to feel like she merited the treatment since her better half continually beat her down sincerely and caused her to feel like nothing. At the point when somebody is thumped for a considerable length of time they begin to accept that they are useless. At last, Laura gets away from her oppressor always when she slaughters him. Not all ladies are so lucky to have the option to begin their lives once again, however. Numerous ladies kick the bucket from abusive behavior at home, and most men don't languish results over their activities. This film shows the triumph of a lady over her oppressor since she goes to any length to pick up her opportunity and regard. centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-66674196956671497082020-08-22T11:06:00.001-07:002020-08-22T11:06:25.149-07:00A Language Older Than WordsA Language Older Than Words Response Paper In the novel A Language Older Than Words, Derrick Jensen covers a wide range of subjects in the numerous parts that he has separated his book into. The two sections that truly intrigued me were Breaking Out and Economics. The two subjects that Jensen talks about is simply the relationship with the and different just as the financial image in our general public individually. I had the option to identify with both of these subjects in various manners. In the part Breaking Out Jensen centers around the picture of oneself and the relationship we have with each other.Jensen expounds on how we are tightened to our own death camp in our general public. It's anything but a genuine death camp yet it is an inhumane imprisonment from our perspective and building the picture of ourselves and our relationship as people. ââ¬Å"In an inhumane imprisonment, it is better (as far as keeping up real life; profound life is an altogether extraordinary inquiry) to be the executioner than the slaughtered, preferable to be a partner over a resister, a watchman than an associate, a director than a gatekeeper, better still to be the chief (125). He expresses that having everybody act in their own wellbeing may not be the wellbeing for society when all is said in done. ââ¬Å"Part of the explanation weââ¬â¢ve had the option to persuade ourselves that by abusing others weââ¬â¢re acting in our own wellbeing is that weââ¬â¢ve acknowledged a seriously tightened meaning of self (125). â⬠Jensen talks about how the picture of our self isn't the picture that we ought to acknowledge. We should break out of that death camp that society has developed and make our own perspective on what sort of individual we need to be without the assistance of society or the dread of society passing judgment on ones self. The quote that Jensen expounded on the inhumane imprisonment truly strokes a harmony in my mind. My own examination of this is we are stu ck as a general public by continually needing to be the best and not paying special mind to other people. The mindset of all men for themselves has spread in our general public. I was thinking we are continually contending throughout everyday life. Regardless of whether it is for work or a spot in a class, we are continually contending. This opposition makes this mindset that it is smarter to be the executioner than the killed. The tightened meaning of the self that Jensen talks about identifies with the exercise manual from class. At the point when it talks about sexuality and how there isnââ¬â¢t simply male or female when there are a wide range of shades of the rainbow. As a general public we shouldnââ¬â¢t must be choked to what they need us to relate to. We have to break out of our ââ¬Ëconcentration campââ¬â¢ and make our own personality without the assistance of society making a decision about us. In the section Economics, Jensen expounds on the way that cash rules al l.He talks about how everything in life transforms into a cash trade. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d like three books, two bundles of chicken McNuggets, and a hit to go, if you don't mind That which it is conceivable to decrease to a ware and sell, is. That which canââ¬â¢t, is either (by definition) depreciated, disregarded, or essentially demolished (139)â⬠. Jensen is attempting to show the peruser that everything has a connection to cash. We need cash so as to do the numerous things in life, for example, travel yet there are things that we donââ¬â¢t need cash for. Hereââ¬â¢s the issue: in this clean universe of financial classes, thereââ¬â¢s no space for adoration, happiness, secret, for the occasionally befuddled and confounding, now and then clear and explaining, in some cases lovely, now and again mysterious pull of body on body, skin on skin soul on soul (139). â⬠How I see this statement is that Jensen is stating we are so expended in getting more cash that we donâ⠬â¢t possess energy for the things that truly matter in our life like love and joy. I can see where Jensen is coming from. I think our general public is stuck into believing that cash is a priority.I think it is significant in light of the fact that we do require cash to endure yet we shouldnââ¬â¢t let cash run our lives. The main statement shows how we consider cash to be a requirement to bliss, love, and puzzle. This helps me to remember the conversation that we had in class on how we might want to venture to the far corners of the planet when we graduate yet we can't as a result of the requirement of cash and getting left behind in this ââ¬Ërat raceââ¬â¢. We have every one of these commitments in a steady progression that we can't seek after the things we truly need to.Jensen carries a ton of good inquiries to mind while perusing his novel. He isn't reluctant to state what he accepts is going on to our general public despite the fact that it appears as though our genera l public is degenerate. His idea on connections opens up my window to realizing how effectively individuals can ââ¬Ëstabââ¬â¢ each other in the back so as to be the executioner not the slaughtered. His subject of cash in our general public shows how we are really materialistic. We should give everything a dollar esteem and on the off chance that it doesnââ¬â¢t have a dollar esteem, at that point it isn't esteemed. What amount is bliss? centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-42408102812473194522020-08-21T08:48:00.001-07:002020-08-21T08:48:22.824-07:00How is Your Credit Score Doing - by Your MotherâHow is Your Credit Score Doingâ - by Your Mother âHow is Your Credit Score Doing?â by Your Mother âHow is Your Credit Score Doing?â by Your MotherAre you taking care of your credit score? And remember, Im your mother, so I can always tell when youre lying.Hello bubbele! I wanted to call just to make sure your phone was working. I figured there must have been something wrong with it, since you havenât called me in weeks, but apparently itâs working just fine. How odd.Anyway, I just wanted to see how your credit is doing. You know you have to pay attention to it, right? Itâs not something you can only think about every other month or so, like your dear loving mother. If youre not careful you can end up with payday loans as your only optionâ"and that would break your fathers heart, you know.Have you been eating well? I saw you were looking a little chubby the last time you came to visit, which was almost a year ago, you know. If youâve been eating out too much, that could lead to increased credit card debt and that isnât great for your credit score. Instead, you shou ld consider meal planning. I read about it in the Oprah magazine. You take a few hours on the weekend to prepare a bunch of food, then youâre all set for the week.Youâve also been paying your bills on time, right? Remember, your father and I are willing to help you out if you need it. Weâd rather help you out now so you donât go into debt and ruin your credit score. Then youâll be better prepared to care for us when weâre old! Which isnât that long away, you know! You have an extra room at your home, right? Wouldnât that be so much nicer than us living in a home or on the streets relying on title loans and cash advances to get by? But if youre too busy for us to live with you someday, wed understand. We only raised you after all, but we wouldnt want to inconvenience you.You should also be building an emergency fund. Do you remember that time your father and I were in the Pocono Mountains and I told him to be careful because there was no mat on the floor of the sh ower in the cabin and he said it was fine because we didnât have a mat for the first 20 years we were living in the house but I pointed out that we arenât the young spring chicks we used to be and it turned out I was right because he fell and we had to go to the emergency room with that nice lady doctor who I thought was the nurse?Ive never told you this but we didnt have an emergency fund! Can you believe it? We had to take out a personal loan just to make ends meet! It was a very nice installment loan with manageable payments and a reasonable interest rate but taking out all that extra debt certainly had a negative effect on our credit score. Please learn from our mistakes!Oh, and donât forget to check your credit score at least once a year at www.AnnualCreditReport.com. Itâs almost as important as washing behind your ears. You are washing behind your ears, right? Also be sure to use your credit card. But not too much! Try to never spend more than 30 percent of your balance and pay it off in full each month. You can mark the date each month on one of the calendars we got you. You know the ones right? We sent them to you for your birthday. We werenât sure which one you would like, so we sent you a Snoopy one, a Ziggy one, and a different Ziggy one. Which one did you end up using?Honestly, though you need to be careful with those credit cards. Spend too much on your cards and the only loans youll be able to qualify for will be bad credit loans or, even worse, no credit check loans! Can you imagine how mortifying that would be for us? What if you took out too many online loans and then you declared bankruptcy and then you had to move back in with your dad and me! What would we tell the neighbors?! Wed have to move. There would be no facing them!OK, I should be going. I have bridge with the other women from the synagogue. You know Helenâs daughter Sarah has an over 800 credit score? You should meet with her. However, due to its strong influence on the child and to the intensity of early attachments, any disruptions to the familyââ¬â¢s structure threatens to trigger a series of ââ¬Å"risk factorsâ⬠that most children are not equipped to handle (Kostelnik, Soderman, Whiren, Rupiper, Gregory, 2012). Amongst these disruptions, parental divorce and family reconstitution present stressful and disturbing challenges for children. Young children ââ¬âin particular five years and youngerââ¬â are in greater risk of failing to cope with such circumstances, as their cognitive and social development has not yet provided them with the necessary mechanisms to understand and handle the complexities of the circumstances (Elliott Richards, 1991; Kostelnik et al ., 2012). Under these events parental support becomes vital, and an array of tools that parents can use to help their children to successfully navigate these difficult situations is available. The war became notorious for the starvation in some of the besieged war-bound regions, and the consequent claims of genocide made by the largely Igbo people of those regions. Causes of the Conflict The conflict was the result of serious tensions, both ethnic and religious, between the different peoples of Nigeria. Like most modern African nations, Nigeria was an artificial construct, put together by agreement between European powers, paying little regard to historical African boundaries or population groups. Military Coup The claims of fraud led to a military coup on January 15, 1966 by left-leaning junior Army officers mostly majors and captains. This coup led to the accession of General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, the head of the Nigerian Army, as head of state of Nigeria. This coup benefited mostly the Igbos because most of the coup plotters were Igbos and Ironsi, an Igbo, promoted many Igbos in the Army at the expense of Yoruba and Hausa officers. On the 29th of July 1966, the Northerners executed a counter-coup. This coup was led by Lt. Col. Murtala Muhammed. It placed Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon into power. Ethnic tensions due to the coup and counter-coup increased and led to the large-scale massacres of Christian Igbos living in the Muslim north. The discovery of large quantities of oil in the south-east of the country had led to the prospect of the south-east becoming self-sufficient and increasingly prosperous. However the exclusion of easterners from power made many fear that the oil revenues would be used to benefit areas in the north and west rather than their own. Hooded Americanism was very well-researched, and could be looked upon as more of a text-book than and novel that one would read for entertainment. David Chalmers has written many books in the political science genre, but Hooded Americanism was the first book that he wrote that was meant to be a reference. Anyone that wants to travel into one of the darkest areas of our nationââ¬â¢s history would enjoy reading this book. Readers that want the facts and truth behind the Klan, and are not satisfied with only seeing the negative image that the media has portrayed of the Klan, should read this book. The book was clearly written for an adult audience. Towards the end of the book, David Chalmers goes into detail when describing various acts of violence that the KKK performed. For example, in chapter forty-five, the author desc ribes floggings of African Americans, and burning of Jewish synagogues. Without these detailed accounts though, the author would have been unsuccessful in his purpose for writing. Crawford U. S History June 10, 2009 The Attacks of the World Trade Centers Over 200,000 tons of steel, 425,000 cubic yards of concrete, a total of 10,000 workers and 7 years, 2 buildings were created known as the World Trade Centers. Its more than its signature twin towers: it was a complex of seven buildings on 16-acres with its own zip code (10048). The construction of the buildings began in 1966 and was completed in April 1973, with the North tower opening 2 years prior of the South. They both consist of 110 floors, and were ranked as the tallest buildings in the world until the Sears Towers was built in 1974. The towers were built downtown-lower Manhattan Development Association by Chase Manhattan Bank chairman David Rockefeller who believed that the towers would benefit the city. Although the towers were a complete accomplishment 60 workers died during the construction. There were 43,600 windows and 99 elevators that can carry about 55 people with a 10,000 pound capacity and can travel up to 27 feet per second. The towers contained 430 businesses from 26 different countries and held up to 5,000 office workers. It had 6 basements and 3 Subway railway stations. Five different channel news stations were also in the Towers along with medical centers and banks. Many restaurants were also included in both Towers. Williams 2 Friday, February 26, 1993 was the date of the first attack on the Twin Towers. It all started with a man named Ramzi Yousef who was trying to be known for the best designer of explosives. Ramzi went to college for electrical engineering and then attended Al Qaeda training camps in a region between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he learned the advantages and disadvantages of firearms and explosives. His first major attack was the bombing of the World Trade Center. No one really knows or have a clue to what really caused Ramzi to attack, but all we know is that the attack was one of the worst attacks in the city of New York. On the morning of February 26, Ramzi drove a Raydar van (which he rented 2 days before) into the parking garage of one of the World Trade Center buildings. He then lit a 20-foot fuse bomb and quickly drove away. 12 minutes later the bomb exploded and instantly cut off the main electrical power line in the tower. The bomb was so powerful that the smoke rose up to the 93rd floor in the tower. It was very difficult to evacuate the people in the towers due to the fact that the smoke was very thick in the halls and the stairways. Many wondered what was going on and all was terrified and confused into why the building was smoking. Not being able to see caused a lot of people being trapped inside the tower longer than others. A group of 17 kindergartners were trapped in the elevators along with hundreds of other people amongst both towers. people were killed and 1,042 were injured altogether during the process of trying to evacuate. Most of the people injured were on the lower floors because they were Williams 3 right above the garage. The explosion damaged the garage badly but didnââ¬â¢t cause the towers to collapse. Ramziââ¬â¢s original plan was to bomb the first tower so it can fall into the second tower, killing thousands of people and destroying both towers. Many wondered why he attacked at a time that was less crowed than usual. Surprisingly the towers took less than a month to be repaired, cleaned, and back in business. It wasnââ¬â¢t long before everything went back to normal and the minor tragedy faded out of societyââ¬â¢s memory. It wouldnââ¬â¢t be until 8 years later that Americaââ¬â¢s eyes would be reopened. Tuesday, September 11, 2001, seemed like a pretty average day until 8:46 a. m. , something tragic happen that will change every American. American Airlines Flight 11 leaving Boston crashed into the North Tower between the 96th and the 103rd floor, killing all 92 passengers, including the 9 flight attendants and both pilots. Just 15 minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower on the 80th floor killing 65 passengers. When the first plane crashed, thousands of people who were on the 96th floor or above were killed instantly. Although the 106th floor wasnââ¬â¢t hit, everyone above that floor was also killed, due to the fact that their escape routes were cut off by fire. Most people jumped out the windows because there was nothing else to do nor was there anywhere to go. After witnessing the plane hit the first tower, people in the second tower began to fear for their lives and try to escape, but they were told to stay at their desks thinking that their uilding wouldnââ¬â¢t be Williams 4 attacked, but little did they know moments later they were hit. Although the North Tower was hit first, the South Tower had collapsed less than in hour later, due to the fact that it was hit lower. All firefighters, soldiers, police officers and everyone else who was trying to escape were crushed. Exactly 29 minutes later, the North Tower joined its twin as it crashed onto the ground killing hundreds and thous ands of people that was in and around both towers. People on the ground were running for their lives as clouds of debris and smoke covered the streets of lower Manhattan. Due to the fact that the Twin Towers was big, no one really knows exactly how many people were dead, but they were able to estimate that about 2,985 people were dead or missing, including the 19 hijackers. The North Tower has been estimated to have killed almost 1,402 people, and the South 614 people. There were mostly people between the ages of 35 and 39 that died. About 3,051 children lost their family members. 89 bodies were found and 19,858 body parts were found. The attack also destroyed 98 vehicles, and 99 days after the attack the fire continued to burn. Of all the people who were still in the towers when they collapsed, only 20 were pulled out alive. Over the next 8 months, the New York Fire Department was divided into four groups and was assigned to organize, clean-up, and search for survivors and human remains. 1. 8 million tons of debris was removed from the disaster site and it cost almost 600 million dollars to clean all of it up. Lots of people thought that it would take over a year to clean up all of the debris left by the towers, but Williams 5 they were finished by May 30, 2002 without any workers being seriously injured. May 2006 was the re-opening of The World Trade Center. The attack on the World Trade Center was a horrendous action towards the United States that affected all Americans. Thousands of people died on September 11, and those people will be forever remembered. In the beginning, the attack was believed to be an attack by terrorists. The United States government told its people that terrorists from the Middle East maliciously hijacked planes and crashed them into the heart of New York City. There is much footage of the plane crashes, leaving a mental scar in the brains of the witnesses. While many believe that what the government is telling them is true, my opinion differs. I honestly donââ¬â¢t believe that terrorists from the Middle East attacked the United States. On the contrary, I believe that the United States is behind the 9/11 attack. It seems very strange how the building collapsed. The planes were crashed into the World Trade Center very high above the ground; the crashes were about the same position in both buildings. It makes very little sense how two buildings would collapse, from the foundation up, when the damage was clearly above the ground. I believe the United States used the Middle East as a scapegoat. The US government needed an excuse to invade the Middle East because Saddam Hussein has been a problem to the US for decades. When the government had their reason, they invaded the Middle East in search for Saddam. centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-56867525773783769042020-04-10T10:21:00.001-07:002020-04-10T10:21:03.909-07:00Sad Story Essay free essay sample Sarah We moved to a small town where my husband was assigned as aminister to a local congregation. I was unpacking one day when thephone rang. A voice on the other end said, Your name was given tome as a possibility for a mentor in our school. Knowing very few peoplein town, I tried to imagine who might have volunteered me for this. Realizing the lady was waiting for an answer, I replied, Let me thinkabout it and call you back. I returned to my unpacking, but my mind was busy going over all thereasons I couldnt be a mentor. I wasnt even a parent, so how couldI work with kids. I wouldnt know what to do. I dont really have thetime. What if the child didnt like me? My list of excuses (uh, I meanreasons) was growing by the minute and I did a pretty good job oftalking myself out of it. Connie, do you remember all thepeople that have taken time for you over the years? I knew this hadcome from God, certainly not from me, as I was too busy being selfishat the time. Faces of family, friends, teachers, and coworkers crossed my mindand all that theyd sacrificed to help me. I was a shy child and Godplaced many loving, patient people along my lifes journey. He knewwho I would need at various points to help me through that particularperiod of my life. Could I do any less for someone else? I was still hesitant, but placed a call to the school and agreed to bea mentor. The lady in the office said, I have a fourth grade girl whoreally needs some help. Just sign in at the school office and we askthat you come one hour each week. The only other things I knew wereher name, Sarah, and that she came from a poor home situation. I was nervous as I arrived for our first mentoring session. I was shownto Sarahs classroom and introduced to her. A room down the hall wasavailable for us to meet in and off we went. I sensed this was going tobe a long hour. Nothing prepared me for what happened that day. Wanting to put Sarah at ease, I said, Let me tell you a little aboutmyself and then you can tell me about yourself. So, I rattled offsome facts and then waited for her to talk. Total silence greeted me. Her long hair hung across her face and she didnt even look at me whenI was talking. We sat in silence for a few minutes and it soon becameobvious she wasnt going to share any information about herself. I hadto think of something quick. Questionswasnt that how you got information from others? Tell meabout your family. When that didnt get any response, I tried, Whatare your favorite subjects in school? Then I ventured, Do you haveany favorite foods? Nothing. Not even a faint shrug of her shoulders. All my fears that I would fail at this came rushing in at once. Howcould I help a child when she wouldnt even speak to me? Not knowing what else to do I said, Why dont we go back to youclassroom? She almost bolted from the room and was down thehall and back in her class before I could even say good-by to her. I prayed about this over the next week and decided to give it alittle more time. I went back over the next several weeks and the scene wasrepeated over and over. I asked questions; she sat in silence. Her teacher assured me Sarah was benefiting from these sessions, but I failed to see what good I was doing. Then one week, something different happened. I had just asked Sarah another question when she looked at meand said, You ask too many questions. After I recovered fromthe shock of hearing her speak, I told her that one way to get meto stop asking questions was for her talk. From that time on, webegan to make progress in our relationship. Bit by bit, she began to share about herself. I want to be a beauticianwhen I graduate from high school, she would often tell me. Sincemost of her family never went beyond ninth or tenth grade, this wassurprising to hear from her. We celebrated such things as improvedgrades and the fact that she was becoming more assertive in expressingherself. On the rare occasion when Id see her parents, they would tellme that Sarah talked about me all the time. I was thrilled to watch herblossom and I hoped that one day we might even be able to talk aboutChristianity. Sarah knew that I was a pastors wife, but I did bring up matters offaith with her as I didnt feel that was my role with her in that setting. As we grew more comfortable with each other, she would occasionallymention church, but nothing deeper. Sarah surprised me one day by greeting me with, Can I call you onthe phone sometime? I was pleased she felt that safe with me andagreed she could call once a week. When she did call, there wouldbe a period of silence and then Id hear, Hi, followed by more silence. After some discussion about how to have a telephone conversation, she began to be more at ease on the phone and would sometimeschat with me as if we were girlfriends. The staff at school couldntbelieve she was calling me and sharing herself so freely. Sarah and I began our relationship when she was in the fourth gradeand continued till she was in high school. We moved at that time, but I still got the occasional phone call from her to fill me in on whatwas happening. One day I received a very special call from Sarah. In numerous phone calls Sarah had mentioned that she was goingto a church near where she lived. I had encouraged her to keepdoing so, but really hadnt pushed her to make any kind of commitment. In one of her last phone calls to me she stated, I went forward atchurch and accepted Christ last Sunday and was baptized. Whata joyous announcement that was to hear! I havent heard from Sarah in quite some time, but she is always inmy heart and my prayers. Sometimes I reflect on the fact thatI almost didnt take the time to be a mentor to Sarah, it grievesme to think that I thought there was no time in my life to help her. I pray that Sarahs life will continue to move in positive directionsbecause of our relationship. She certainly blessed my life. I hope you will consider giving of your time and talents to a childin need. Please let a child know that someone believes in them. I think of it as an investment in our future. Be a mentor! I wonder where would I be today without the support of somany wonderful people. And, where would this child be if I hadnt taken. . . Connie L. Coppings The old fisherman Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to out-patients at the clinic. One summer evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful looking man. Why, hes hardly taller than my eight-year-old, I thought as I stared at the stooped, shriveled body. But the appalling thing was his face lopsided from swelling, red and raw. Yet his voice was pleasant as he said, Good evening. Ive come to see if youve a room for just one night. I came for a treatment this morning from the eastern shore, and theres no bus til morning. He told me hed been hunting for a room since noon but with no success. No one seemed to have a room. I guess its my face I know it looks terrible, but my doctor says with a few more treatments For a moment I hesitated, but his next words convinced me. I could sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning. I told him we would find him a bed, but to rest on the porch. I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked the old man if he would join us. No thank you. I have plenty. And he held up a brown paper bag. When I had finished the dishes, I went out on the porch to talk with him for a few minutes. It didnt take long time to see that this old man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children, and her husband, who was hopelessly crippled from a back injury. He didnt tell it by way of complaint. In fact, every other sentence was preface with a thanks to God for a blessing. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer. He thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going. At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the childrens room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded and the little man was out on the porch. He refused breakfast. But just before he left for his bus, haltingly, as if asking a great favor, he said, Could I please come back and stay the next time I have a treatment? I wont put you out a bit. I can sleep fine in a chair. He paused a moment and then added, Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children dont seem to mind. I told him he was welcome to come again. On his next trip he arrived a little after seven in the morning. As a gift, he brought a big fish and a quart of the largest oysters I had ever seen. He said he had shucked them that morning before he left so that theyd be nice and fresh. I knew his bus left at 4:00 a. m. and I wondered what time he had to get up in order to do this for us. During the years he came to stay overnight with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden. Other times we received packages in the mail, always by special delivery fish and oysters packed in a box with fresh young spinach or kale every leaf carefully washed. Knowing that he must walk three miles to mail these, and knowing how little money he had made the gifts doubly precious. When I received these little remembrances, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbor made after he left that first morning. Did you keep that awful looking man last night? I turned him away! You can lose roomers by putting up such people! Maybe we did lose roomers once or twice. But oh! If only they could have known him, perhaps their illness would have been easier to bear. I know our family will always be grateful to have known him. From him, we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude to God. Recently I was visiting a friend who has a greenhouse. As she showed me her flowers, we came to the most beautiful one of all a golden chrysanthemum, bursting with blooms. But to my great surprise, it was growing in an old dented, rusty bucket. I thought to myself, If this were my plant, Id put it in the loveliest container I had! My friend changed my mind. I ran short of pots, she explained, and knowing how beautiful this one would be, I thought it wouldnt mind starting out in this old pail. Its just for a little while, until I can put it out in the garden. She must have wondered why I laughed so delightedly, but I was imagining such a scene in heaven. Heres an especially beautiful one, God might have said when he came to the soul of the sweet old fisherman. He wont mind starting in this small body. All this happened long ago and now, in Gods garden, how tall this lovely soul must stand. Mary Bartels Bray Mother and Son My mom only had one eye. I hated her, she was such an embarrassment. My mom ran a small shop at a flea market. Sh e collected little weeds and such to sell, anything for the money we needed she was such an embarrassment. There was this one day during elementary school. I remember that it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school Your mom only has one eye?! and they taunted me. I wished that my mom would just disappear from this world so I said to my mom, Mom, why dont you have the other eye?! Youre only going to make me a laughingstock. Why dont you just die? My mom did not respond. I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, it felt good to think that I had said what Id wanted to say all this time. Maybe it was because my mom hadnt punished me, but I didnt think that I had hurt her feelings very badly. That night I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. Because of the thing I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my mother who was crying out of her one eye. So I told myself that I would grow up and become successful, because I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. Then I studied really hard. I left my mother and came to Seoul and studied, and got accepted in the Seoul University with all the confidence I had. Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now Im living happily as a successful man. I like it here because its a place that doesnt remind me of my mom. This happiness was getting bigger and bigger, when someone unexpected came to see me What?! Whos this?! It was my mother Still with her one eye. It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my moms eye. And I asked her, Who are you? I dont know you!!! as if I tried to make that real. I screamed at her How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out here now! And to this, my mother quietly answered, oh, Im so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address, and she disappeared. Thank good ness she doesnt recognize me. I was quite relieved. I told myself that I wasnt going to care, or think about this for the rest of my life. Then a wave of relief came upon me one day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. I lied to my wife saying that I w as going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went down to the old shack, that I used to call a house just out of curiosity there, I found my mother fallen on the cold ground. But I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand. it was a letter to me. My Son, I think my life has been long enough now. And I wont visit Seoul anymore but would it be too much to ask if I wanted you to come visit me once in a while? I miss you so much. And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school. For you Im sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldnt stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye o I gave you mine I was so proud of my son that was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. The couple times that you were angry with me. I thought to myself, its because he loves me. I miss the times when you were still young around me. I miss you so much. I love you. You mean the world to me. My world shattered! Then I cried for the person who lived for me. My Mother. Passing Along A Little Spark Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single mom) dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer that students (especially boys! begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Robby. But Robby said that it had always been his mothers dream to hear him play the piano. So I took him as a student. Well, Robby began with his piano lessons and from the beginning I thought it was a hopeless endeavor. As much as Robby tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm needed to excel. But he dutifully reviewed his scales and some elementary pieces that I require all my students to learn. Over the months he tried and tried while I listened and cringed and tried to encourage him. At the end of each weekly lesson hed always say, My moms going to hear me play someday. But it seemed hopeless. He just did not have any inborn ability. I only knew his mother from a distance as she dropped Robby off or waited in her aged car to pic k him up. She always waved and smiled but never stopped in. Then one day Robby stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to pursue something else. I also was glad that he stopped coming. He was a bad advertisement for my teaching! Several weeks later I mailed to the students homes a flyer on the upcoming recital. To my surprise Robby (who received a flyer) asked me if he could be in the recital. I told him that the recital was for current pupils and because he had dropped out he really did not qualify. He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. Miss Hondorf Ive just got to play! he insisted. I dont know what led me to allow him to play in the recital. Maybe it was his persistence or maybe it was something inside of me saying that it would be all right. The night for the recital came. The high school gymnasium was packed with parents, friends and relatives. I put Robby up last in the program before I was to come up and thank all the students and play a finishing piece. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and I could always salvage his poor performance through my curtain closer. Well, the recital went off without a hitch. The students had been practicing and it showed. Then Robby came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled and his hair looked like hed run an eggbeater through it. Why didnt he dress up like the other students? I thought. Why didnt his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night? Robby pulled out the piano bench and he began. I was surprised when he announced that he had chosen Mozarts Concerto #21 in C Major. I was not prepared for what I heard next. His fingers were light on pianissimo to fortissimo from allegro to virtuoso. His suspended chords that Mozart demands were magnificent! Never had I heard Mozart played so well by a person his age. After six and a half minutes he ended in a grand crescendo and everyone was on their feet in wild applause. Overcome and in tears I ran up on stage and put my arms around Robby in joy. Ive never heard you play like that Robby! Howd you do it? Through the microphone Robby explained: Well Miss Hondorf remember I told you my mom was sick? Well, actually she had cancer and passed away this morning. And well. she was born deaf so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play. I wanted to make it special. There wasnt a dry eye in the house that evening. As the people from Social Services led Robby from the stage to be p laced into foster care, I noticed that even their eyes were red and puffy and I thought to myself how much richer my life had been for taking Robby as my pupil. No, Ive never had a protigi but that night I became a protigi of Robbys. He was the teacher and I was the pupil. For it is he that taught me the meaning of perseverance and love and believing in yourself and maybe even taking a chance in someone and you dont know why. (A footnote to this story) After serving in Desert Storm, Robby was killed in the senseless bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in April of 1995, where he was reportedly. playing the piano. And now, a footnote to the story. This story has been passed around by e-mail. It has not yet been proven to be a true story as no mention has been made of the exact name of the music teacher nor of the boy. The story proves that we all can make a difference. We all have thousands of opportunities a day to help realize Gods plan. So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a spark of the Divine? Special Delivery Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the Surgeon come out of the operating room, saying: How is my little boy? Is he going to be O. K.? When can I see him? The surgeon responded, Im sorry, we did all we could. Sally said, Why do little children get cancer, doesnt GOD care any more? GOD, where were you when my son needed you? The surgeon softly told her, One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes to let you spend time with your sons remains before its transported to the university. Sally asked that the nurse stay with her while she said good-bye to her son. As she ran her fingers through his thick red curly hair, the nurse said, Would you like a lock of his hair? Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of his hair and p ut it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally. She gazed at her sonââ¬â¢s body as she spoke to the nurse. It was Jimmys idea to give his body to the university for study. He said it might help somebody else, and that is what he wanted. I said, no at first, but Jimmy said, ââ¬ËMom I wont be using it after I die, maybe it will help some other little boy to be able to spend one more day with his motherââ¬â¢. My Jimmy had a heart of gold, always thinking of someone else and always wanting to help others if he could. Sally walked out of the Childrens Hospital for the last time now after spending most of the last 6 months there. She sat the bag with Jimmys things in it on the seat beside of her in the car. The drive home was hard and it was even harder to go into an empty house. She took the bag to Jimmys room and started placing the model cars and things back in his room exactly where he always kept them. She lay down across his bed and cried herself to sleep holding his pillow. Sally woke up about midnight and lying beside her on the bed, was a letter folded up. She opened the letter, it said: Dear Mom, I know youre going to miss me, but dont think that I will ever forget you or stop loving you because Im not around to say I LOVE YOU. Ill think of you every day mom and Ill love you even more each day. Some day we will see each other again. If you want to adopt a little boy so you wont be so lonely, he can have my room and my old stuff to play with. If you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldnt like the same things as us boys do, so you will have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like. Dont be sad when you think about me, this is really a great place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything here. The Angels are so friendly, and I love to watch them fly. Jesus doesnt look like any of the pictures I saw of Him, but I knew it was Him as soon as I saw Him. Jesus took me to see GOD! And guess what mom? I got to sit on GODS knee and talk to Him like I was somebody important. I told GOD that I wanted to write you a letter and tell you good-bye and everything, but I knew that wasnt allowed. God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter with. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel that is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him about ââ¬Å"Where was He when I needed him? â⬠God said, The same place He was when Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children. Oh, by the way Mom, nobody else can see what is written on this paper but you. To everyone else, it looks like a blank piece of paper. I have to give God His pen back now, He has some more names to write in the Book Of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. Im sure the food will be great. I almost forgot to let you know now I dont hurt anymore, the cancer is all gone. Im glad because I couldnt stand that pain anymore and God couldnt stand to see me suffer the pain either, so He sent The Angel of Mercy to get me. The Angel said I was Special Delivery! centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-52391484450795314302020-03-09T21:31:00.001-07:002020-03-09T21:31:03.590-07:00Free Essays on SWOT Analysis - Sun MicrosystemsI. Introduction The term project is used to describe a set of linked activities or it can be precisely defined as a onetime activity with a well defined set of desired results (Hellriegel 2001). Some of the major features of a project include a definite start and finish, a time frame for completion, uniqueness as well as involvement of people on a temporary basis. Thus, for any project to be a success, project management plays a pivotal role in the implementation of the whole project. Against this background, this case study based essay seeks to critically analyse the project management practices and outcomes in the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) project being executed by Electronic Data Systems (EDS). The essay is divided into three phases and it will be structured as follows: Phase one deals with a p reliminary scope statement, phase two deals with presentation of an analysis, critique and recommendations regarding the project management areas of estimating, quality and communication as they apply to NMCIââ¬â¢s performance and the third phase will deal with presentation of an analysis, critique and recommendations regarding the project management areas of risk management, scheduling and budgeting and project execution as they apply to the case of NMCI. An assessment of whether the project was a success from the stakeholdersââ¬â¢ perspective will be given at the end of the essay. Phase 1 The Preliminary Project Scope Statement is a framework or guideline that spells the main ideas and decisions to be made in the project and can be constantly reviewed to ensure compliance with the project goals set (Yeates & Cadle 1996). It documents all the requirements of the project as well as the boundaries within which the project will be implemented whereby there is a common understand ing between the project management team and the stakeholders involved. Thus, ââ¬Å"the preliminary Project Scope Statement defines the project and establishes what must be accomplished at a high level,â⬠(Elyse, PMP & CPHIMS 2006). The project objective in this case of NMCI is to build a single and seamless network. Against this background, EDS has managed to get a contract worth up to $9 billion to supply the US Navy and Marine Corps with a single, seamless network. Indeed, this is seen as the biggest government contract in the US. The other objective is that The Navy contract is being regarded as a pilot project for the way the military as a whole will run its IT in the future. In other words, this project seeks to create a situation whereby the Navy will be given the autonomy to manage its affairs with regards to its information and technology (IT) needs in the future. The project requirements include IT infrastructure in the form of computers, hardware as well as software that is required in executing this project. The project boundary is limited to EDS, the contractors, NMCI and the government of the US which is also a sponsor of the project. The project also assumes that EDS systems are intended to be fully operational by June 2003 which entails that the Navy will be ruled by the PC business in the years to come. Within the scope of this project, the major constraint likely to be encountered is related to cultural factors in the centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-42324646856822121092020-02-06T04:45:00.001-08:002020-02-06T04:45:02.059-08:00Discuss the health problems and health service issues associated with EssayDiscuss the health problems and health service issues associated with homelessness - Essay Example As a means of understanding homelessness to a more full and complete extent, the analyst invariably comes to the realization that this social reality has a direct impact upon the level of health and overall longevity of the individuals that are forced to integrate with it. In such a way, homelessness has a profound impact upon society and health systems of the society due to the fact that the homeless individuals are oftentimes prone to a great number of both physical and emotional hardships that the general population is not. In such a way, this brief analysis will seek to discuss the spectrum of housing need, the reality of the fact that homeless groups are necessarily hard-to-reach and underrepresented within healthcare research and availability, the fact that the homeless cannot and should not be understood as a homogenous group, the impact and reality of the public health issues that homelessness necessarily portends, a discussion of some of the most common health problems that are associated with this group, the nonlinear determination that health has upon the homeless, the lack of understanding and appreciation for homelessness within the medical community (and the research community that is a part of it), the means by which homelessness necessarily reorients the individuals priorities to place a low emphasis upon health and well-being, and the painful and ultimately harmful level that social stigmas attached homelessness necessarily denote. One of the key compliments of homelessness within the current dynamic is necessarily with regards to the ever-increasing population and reduced levels of housing that are available around the globe. Due to the economic downturn, developers and governmental housing projects have necessarily all but ground to a standstill (Seiler & Moss, 2012). What this has created is a situation in which an ever-increasing demand for housing is not being met due to the fact that individuals within the current economy neither have the means more the wherewithal to seek out and purchase, or indeed continue to pay mortgages, on homes and properties that they would otherwise use for themselves and for their families. Although homelessness has traditionally been understood as a problem affecting only the very lowest class within a society, the events of the past several years have highlighted and underscored the fact that homelessness can affect each and every individual within the system to a profound degree. From a societal interpretation of this particular drawback, it is the onus of governmental and state entities to ensure that the supply and demand for housing are being met in an equitable manner (Hwang et al, 2010). Though increased levels of government control with regards to the real estate industry is not something that many individuals within society would necessarily want to take place, the reality of the fact is that the current dynamic of economics take nation necessarily demands action on the part of these local, state and federal entities to ensure that the hemorrhaging problems associated with homelessness are ameliorated in the best means possible. Taking the issue closer to the topic of health and the means by which society integrates with an understanding of homelessness, the reader/analyst should understand that centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-30377155421858610542020-01-28T16:41:00.001-08:002020-01-28T16:41:03.745-08:00The Philosophy of Freidrich Froebel Essay Example for Free The Philosophy of Freidrich Froebel Essay Friedrich Froebel was born in 1782 in Oberweissbach, Germany. His mother died when he was 9 months old and his father was away on pastoral duties quite often so he went and lived with his uncle when he was 10 years old. Froebel was not completely interested in school but enjoyed forestry, geometry, and land surveying (Dunn 169). His upbringing and interests, along with his Christian faith strongly influenced his educational philosophy. Friedrich used learner-centered, child-centered, experience-based ideas to develop the worlds first kindergarten, a school for young children (Henson 8). The father of kindergarten was the title usually associated with Froebel and his philosophy. His methods allow children to grow and move on as they conquer new concepts not when educators or administrators decide. Froebels philosophy was influenced by the teaching methods of Pestalozzi (Dunn 169). He agreed with many of Pestalozzis ideas but thought that there was too much focus on memorization and direct instruction. Froebel balanced group activities with individual play, direction from teachers was balanced with periods of freedom, and the studies of nature, mathematics, and art were balanced by exploring (Froebel Web). Through exploration by the child and observation by the teacher education could be distributed as was needed in the best interest of the child. He wanted students to figure things out for themselves through discovery. If a child can discover a concept on their own that child is more likely to grasp and clearly understand that concept because they were the means by which they learned the information. Play was a major aspect of his philosophy because it gave children a chance to externalize their inner nature and a chance to imitate and try out various adult roles. Children had the chance to try on many faces and figures so that they could find out who they were and who they should be. Even today people try to find out who they are because in the essence of each of us we feel that who were are or supposed to be is already in our souls we just have to discover who that is. Through play and role playing children could learn how to solve their own problems. Much of what people learn comes through their experiences, if children are able to practice and experience certain problems they will develop the skills necessary to problem solve. If children could work through these situations there could be a decrease in behavioral problems as children grow because they had the chance to develop their problem solving skills at a young age. According to Froebel, the ultimate purpose of education is the realization of a faithful, pure, inviolate, and hence holy life (Dunn 170). Since Froebels philosophy was based on idealism he believed every person had spiritual worth and dignity. If a person assumes that each individual they encounter has worth and thus should be treated so more people in life would be, simply put, happier. It comes down to respecting each individual for whoever they are. Thus like idealists he believed that children had within him all he was to be at birth. As Dunn states, practice in education should be designed to develop and cultivate individuals toward attainment of their destiny (170). Starting children off in kindergarten gave them a chance to grown and be what they were destined to be, by partaking in play and role playing with plenty of space to develop properly. In todays society there is a lot of talk about finding yourself and taking space to figure out who they are. I think a lot of that is because people never had a chance to do so when they were young. Todays society just speeds through life trying to get one step ahead of the next person and later in life they stop to reexamine who they have become because they didnt take the chance to discover that person when they should have. Froebel stressed the importance of creating a happy, harmonious environment where the child can grow; and where the value of self activity and play are foundation to the development of the whole person (Froebel Web). Teachers should observe students during play so that they know how and what to teach and gear toward each student because you need to cultivate the inner person in each. It isnt all about chaos because there is order and structure in play and free will. Play and freedom are structured through gifts and occupation. The gifts are used to help children understand concepts and the occupations to make products. Froebel was trying to create a school that uses the childs imagination and creativity already in them to foster an education plan that fit their minds and souls. We have been taught in the bible to be like children because they are pure and clean, if more of us became like children then the world would be a better place. The effects this theory has on the classroom can be positive and negative. The idea of a child-centered classroom is a terrific idea but can make the classroom seem very chaotic and haphazard which is difficult for some teachers and parents. With a child-centered classroom the planning a teacher puts into her lessons must be flexible and follow the needs of each individual, which is difficult because each child has different needs so planning could be a lot of different activities and flexibility. This philosophy allows opportunity for all students to completely succeed because it works with the childs strengths and educational pace. A problem with that is that children dont develop at the same rate so children will be going over different material at the same time. By allowing children to work on their own, the behavior they have will improve because they feel that they have more control over their own education and pace. As many positive effects as this free child-centered philosophy has, it also has in negative effects. Students may not reach their potential if they are not challenged by high expectations. There are also fewer concrete assessments to gage child success and failure. The philosophy could be a huge success if employed by a highly committed teacher who is prepared to truly encourage individual growth. The teachers role in the classroom is not just as observer who watches children play and explore independently but to guide the children to make discoveries. Open ended questions are a great way for teachers to foster critical thinking because the teacher does not provide the student with opinions (Froebel Web). Teachers are guiders and helpers for children to explore who and what they are to become. There are a lot of great ideas that have come from this philosophy, one being the introduction of kindergarten into the educational system. Some people today even think that it is too early to start a child in school but when is it really a great time to start? There are more people who are starting to embrace the idea of a child-centered approach because too much of education is focused on what we think children need to learn and not necessarily what they need to learn or are ready to learn. Teachers today need to stop and look at educators and philosophers of the past to recognize simple theories they employed. Todays education has become caught up in speed and necessity to be better than the next guy, we have forgotten to look at the people we are teaching and the fact that some are not ready for what we think they should be. There is a need for adults to get back to a simpler way of life so that we dont forget that children are precious gifts that must be treasured and fostered. Works Cited Dunn, Shelia G. The pensive, unhurried mood of the poem is reflected with a calm rich imagery that creates a vivid mental picture. The simple words and rhyme scheme of the poem give it an easy flow, which adds to the tranquility of the piece. Every aspect of the poem builds off the others to put the mind into the calm of a winter evening. The first stanza of the poem is rather simple and provides the basis for the imagery. It mentions the woods and implies that they are located away from town and civilization "his house is in the village though". It also shows the easy pace that speaker is taking, having plenty of time to simply watch the falling snow. As I think about them, the words of the first stanza are not overtly somber, they do however through their order and the way they were chosen create a rather pensive mood. The second stanza provides a more in depth view of the imagery sketched out in the first; it also provides a more definite time and location. The first two lines of this stanza firmly place the reader rather deep in the woods and away from any dwelling. He is so far out in fact that his horse is puzzled by his actions. The next line gives a better image of the scene "Between the woods and frozen lake"; it seems to be a rather quiet and lonely place. The next line then provides that it is night... centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-46514920007055791912020-01-12T09:29:00.001-08:002020-01-12T09:29:02.473-08:00Malaysian Cyber Law and Electronic Government LawSMK GERIK JALAN KUALA KENDERONG 33300 GERIK. CONCLUSION REFERENCE 1. 0 INTRODUCTION A computer network and communicat ion is definedà as a collection of computers and devicesconnected by communications channels that facilitates communications among users and allowsusers to share resources with other users. Computer Network A computer network is a system of interconnected computers and peripheral devices. For example, it may connect computers, printers, scanners and cameras. Using hardware and software, these interconnected computing devices can communicate with each other through defined rules of data communications. In a network, computers can exchange and share information and resources. A computer network may operate on wired connections or wireless connections. When two or more networks are linked or connected and are able to communicate with one another using suitable hardware and software, it is called an internetwork. Communications Communications is about the transfer of information from a sender, across a distance, to a receiver.Using electricity, radio waves or light, information and dat a in the form of codes are transmitted through a physical medium such as wire, cable, or even the atmosphere. Therefore, in order to make communications possible from computers, across telephones and radios and back to computers and other digital devices again, there must be a signal translator, which we call-a modem. The modem, which is short for modulator or demodulator, converts digital signals into analog and back again into digital signals for information to move across the telephone line. Computer NetworkCommunications 2. 0 MOBILE COMPUTING 2. Definition Mobile computing refers to the use of small and portable computing devices in wireless enabled networks that provide wireless connections to a internet or central main server. These devices include laptops, notebook PCs, tablet PCs, palmtops, personal digital assistant (PDAs) and other hand held devices. A radio-signaling device is installed inside these devices for receiving and transmitting electronic data. Mobile computing has enabled users to remain connected while on the move. High end users can opt for satellite based networking which provides wireless connectivity anywhere in the world. However, this technology is costly and will take many years to become as affordable as Wi-Fi and WiMax. 2. 2Specification, services, and frequencies of Mobile Computing The latest 4G device fromà T-mobile is the Samsung Galaxy Sà 4G. This phone works on T-Mobile's HSPA+ 4G network, which uses a different technical standard than Sprint or Verizon Wireless' 4G networks. The Samsungà Galaxy S 4Gà is the wireless carrier's firstà smartphone à that is capable of delivering theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps while in one of T-Mobile's 4G coverage areas. In addition to fast speeds, theà Galaxy S 4G has a large, 4-inch display, aà Samsung 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor, and a preinstalled 16GB microSD memory card. Like other phones inà the Galaxy S line, this phone also has Samsung'sà Super AMOLED touchscreen display. 3. 0 INTERNET TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICES 3. 1VoIP VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is refered as the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based networks. There are three ways to connect to a VoIP network which is by using a VoIP telephone, using a normal telephone with a VoIP adapter and using a computer with speakers and microphone. . 2BLOG A blog (web log or weblog) is one of the popular activities on the Internet. Most of these blogs are publicly shared and the autors frequently update the content on a regular basis. Blog is usually referred to the text produced by author about his or her thoughts, experiences or interest. The world of blogging is referred as blogosphere. Another new term is the blogonomics, which refers to people using the blogosphere to generate money. The posts to a blog are usually arranged in this order, the most recent entries will always be on top of the journal. . 0 TYPES of NETWORK 4. 1PAN A Personal Area Network (PAN) is a computer network used for communication among computer devices including PCs, laptops, printers, telephones, digital cameras, mobile phone, video game consoles and personal digital assistants, close to one person. PAN may be wired with USB port, Firewire port, Infrared(IrDA) and Bluetooth technologies. Bluetooth is the popular wireless PAN used by most people, especially the mobile phone technologies, and it applies the IEEE 802. 15. 1 standards. 4. 2VPNA Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the internet, to remote offices or individuals with secure access to their organisationââ¬â¢s private network. VPN uses tunnelling mechanism to maintain privacy and security of the data. Tunnelling means transmiting data packets across a public network. VPN is often used by companies to provide access from their internal network resources to their home or mobile workers. 4. 3WLAN Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is a t ype of LAN that uses high-frequency radio waves to communicate between nodes.WLAN improves user mobility, speed and scalability to move around within a broad coverage area and still be connected to the network. The IEEE standard for Wireless Lans is 802. 11. 4. 4WIMAX Worlwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is the industry term for broadband wireless access network that is developed based on the IEEE 802. 16 standard. WiMAX is a Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) technology that will connect WiFi hotspots to the Internet and provides a wireless extension to cable and DSL for larger broadband access.WiMAX would operate similar to WiFi but at higher speeds, over greater distances and for a greater number of users. A WiMAX system will have two major parts: * A WiMAX base station, similar in concept to a mobile phone tower. * A WiMAX receiver installed at home. 5. 0 CONCLUSION As a brief conclusion, computer network and communication are expanding rapidly each and e veryday making sharing of information trilion times better before they exist. Mobile computing is now getting edgier by the day. New technologies are being implemented, tested and apply in mobile computing making us and the future another step closer. The internet is also getting better along the lines of the information age. Meanwhile, types of network available for us adding it on top of making computer networks and communications the new best friend. Du Bois offered different strategies for dealing with the problems of poverty and discrimination faced by Black Americans at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Assess the appropriateness of each of these strategies in the historical context in which each was developed. After the period where big businesses operated the country to benefit themselves, the middle class activists began to rise against these unjust actions. The new era was known to be the Progressive Era. Not only were progressives fighting for restoration in social equality, others like muckrakers were revealing the inadequate conditions in factories. Due to these events, Africanâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Because of these actions and different techniques, society divided into those who advocated Du Bois and those who advocated Washington. However, Du Bois gained less support than Booker T. Washington because Washingtonââ¬â¢s viewpoint was promoted by much of the white population. Therefore consequence of this support was that Washingtonââ¬â¢s approaches to gain full citizenship was more suitable than Du Boisââ¬â¢ policies. The Progressive Era was a term used to describe a time period that had numerous reforms to correct the problems of the country. The origins of this time period was created from the lower class aiming to, ââ¬Å"eliminate corruption in government, regulate business practices, address health hazards, and improve working conditions.â⬠Not only did the lower class support reform, but middle class workers too because they were in competition with immigrants for jobs or they were women struggling for the same rights that men had. Another reform Progressives wanted was the right to a direct say in the primaries of elections so the public had more control within government. With more control in the government, this would allow the power of big corporation to be limited and prevent future problems that the middle and lower classes could endure. These goals the reformers had in the Progressive Era, led to a plethora of movements and actions in centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-22805818196523507792019-12-27T02:19:00.001-08:002019-12-27T02:19:02.098-08:00How to Manage and Identify the Boxelder Tree Boxelder, also known as ash-leaved maple is one of the most common and adaptable urban trees in North America -- thoughà it also may be the trashiest from a visual perspective. Planting it next to your house is probably not a good idea. The best thing about the tree is that it is comfortable on poor sites where more desirable trees cannot maintain adequate health for long life. It is very commonly seen in the treeless plains and western United States as a street tree. You can use the tree for quick growth but plan to interplant with more desirable trees to provide for a lasting tree canopy. Boxelder can be a treasure on adverse tree sites. Boxelder Specifics The scientific name of boxelder is Acer negundo (AY-ser nuh-GUHN-doe). Common names include ashleaf maple, Manitoba maple, and poison ivy tree and the tree is a member of the plant family Aceraceae. Although considered by many a maple outcast, it is indeed in the maple family and the only native maple with more than one single blade or leaflet on a single leaf stalk. Boxelder grows in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8 and is native to North America. The tree is sometimes crafted into a bonsai specimen but often used as a screen/ windbreak and for land reclamation. It grows rapidly, can become very large and needs a lot of space. Boxelder is still a very common tree to see in a yard or park west of the Mississippi River.ââ¬â¹ Boxelder Cultivars There are several attractive cultivars of boxelder including Aureo-Variegata, Flamingo and Auratum. The cultivar Acer negundo Aureo-Variegata is noted for its leaves bordered in gold. Acer negundo Flamingo has variegated leaves with pink margins and is somewhat available at local nurseries. Acer negundo Auratum has abundant gold leaves but is a little harder to find. You must remember that even though these cultivars are ornamental, they still share the original boxelder treeââ¬â¢s undesirable characteristics that include unattractive female fruit and breakage that increase the chances of the trees early removal due to quick growth. Problems With Boxelder Boxelder is a rather unattractive tree where limbs break with a vengeance --à a landscape maintenance nightmare. The fruit droops in clusters which some describe as looking like dirty brown socks which adds to the overall trashy look of the tree. The boxelder bug makes things even worse. Robert Schafer / Getty Images Boxelder bug or Leptocoris trivittatus loves the boxelder tree. This half-inch red-striped insect is a true pest during winter where the adult multiplies and invades homes near where boxelder trees grow. It is one of the most common household pests in the United States. The bug emits a foul odor, stains fabric and can cause asthmatic reactions. It does no harm to the tree. Boxelder Description A boxelder in the landscape grows to a height of 25 to 50 feet, depending on tree variety and site conditions. One of the tallest ever measured had a recorded height of 110 feet. The trees crown spread is 25 to 45 feet and the crown is typically broad and ragged or disheveled. The tree often has multiple furrowed trunks or very squat single trunks. Flowers are without petals, dioecious and yellowish-green and the female tassels are very conspicuous. The very maple-looking seeds, called samaras hang in long, profuse clusters and stay on the tree throughout winter. Nearly every seed is viable and will cover up a disturbed area with seedlings --à a very prolific seeder is boxelder. Boxelder Leaf Botanics Leaf arrangement: opposite/suboppositeLeaf type: odd pinnately compoundLeaflet margin: lobed; serrateLeaflet shape: lanceolate; ovateLeaflet venation: pinnate; reticulateLeaf type and persistence: deciduousLeaflet blade length: 2 to 4 inchesLeaf color: greenFall color: orange; yellowFall characteristic: showy Pruning Boxelder You will have to prune this tree regularly.à Boxelder branches droop as the tree grows and will require pruning if you have consistent walking and vehicular traffic under the canopy. The tree form is not particularly showy and should be grown with one single trunk to maturity. The tree is susceptible to breakage and can occur either at the crotch due to poor collar formation, or where the wood itself is weak and tends to break. Superior Western Boxelders There are also good qualities of boxelders in western North America. It seems that the tree takes on positive characteristics in the west that is not seen in trees in the eastern half of North America. California interior boxelder takes on yellow and red colors in autumn that rival eastern maple. Its drought tolerance makes the tree a welcome plant in that dry country landscape and very easy on limited water resources. centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-14388623972549419202019-12-18T22:06:00.001-08:002019-12-18T22:06:03.704-08:00The purpose of this assignment is to understand the... The purpose of this assignment is to understand the importance of literacies, and why it should be a priority within the teaching context. This paper will compare and contrast the didactic pedagogy with critical pedagogy and will deeply look at the pros and cons of both literacies. Introduction Definition of literacy Literacy is the ability to read and write and use written information and to write appropriately in a range of contexts. It also involves the integration of speaking, listening, viewing and critical thinking with reading and writing, and includes the cultural knowledge which enables a speaker, writer or reader to recognise and use language appropriate to different social situations (Freebody Luke, 1990). Students today are already very familiar with the concept of social media and the internet and have better understanding in utilizing technologies more than their parents and teachers. With the changing approach of students, it is essential for schools to embrace and adopt skills and learning requirements needed for the new generation. School environment is also changing at a fast pace nowadays because of technology and teachers accepting new learning pedagogy to educate the students which is quite essential. Answer: The ambient light sensors implemented in the mobile devices provide the illumination data and the data helps in improving the screen brightness of the mobile under sunlight, the data also helps in decreasing the screen brightness in absence of light to lessen eye fatigue. The summary will highlight the side channel by which the security breaches can be detected, different algorithms and mechanisms will also be showcased. The ambient light sensors leak sensitive information of the mobile which helps the intruders to steal the information. In this way, the security and the privacy of the mobile can be compromised. Side channels can access the security threats; side channels can detect the unwanted information leakage (Aviv et al. 2012). The security information like Personal Identification Number (PIN) and the unlock pattern can be traced and tracked by exploring the light sensor in the mobile phones. The PIN can be detected and some notable authors have suggested the methods, the window size of the phone can be moved over the sensor data to detect the input PIN, while some other suggested the PIN data can be found by capturing vibrations from the phones microphone while the user presses a touchscreen button (Gibler et al. 2012). By utilising the Matlabs StatisticsToolbox and machine-learning algorithm, the unknown PIN can be determined. Lastly, by comparing the classification algorithm mechanisms like logistic regression mechanisms, KNN mechanisms and discriminant analysis mechanisms the PIN can be detected (Aviv et al. 2012). However, there are certain limitations, if the users edit the PIN in between while writing PIN or while the user is entering the PIN during a walk around, the PIN cannot be recognised. It can be concluded from the summary that the light sensor of the mobile phone has certain advantages as well as certain security risks associated with it. The PIN, the unlock pattern can be identified by the algorithms and mechanisms discussed. References J. Aviv, B. Sapp, M. Blaze, and J. M. Smith. The decision to end the draft was the catalyst to such change. This decision allowed for womens participation in the armed forces in unprecedented numbers. The United States Armed Forces have more female numbers than any other nation in the world, both in actual numbers and in percentages (Holm, 1982). The drive for an all-volunteer force, along with an aggressive tide of feminism and congressional passage of the equal rights Amendments led to a gradual shift in the role and status of women in the military (Holm, 1982). In todays military, women were no longer confined to traditional roles in the medical and administrative fields. Almost all military job categories and military occupational specialties (MOS) have been opened to women. They now repair tanks, warplanes, and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). They serve on naval vessels tha t deploy to service ships and submarines of the operational fleet and on Coast Guard cutters operating off United States shores. They serve on missile crews, operate heavy equipment, and direct air traffic. They also provide essential support to combat troops in the field (Holm, 1982). It appears that women have been integrated into practically every aspect of the military; yet there are some jobs that remain closed to them, namely-direct combat specialties (Holm, 1982; Goldman, 1982). It is over these residual exclusions that controversy rages. We will write a custom essay on Women in combat1 specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Technically, women are barred by low or policy from what is defined in narrow terms as combat. Each of the United States Armed Services excludes females from active Combat. The nature and extent of the exclusion varies with each service. Yet, many argue that the distinction between combat and non-combat becomes blurred in the context of women warfare (Gilder, 1979; Holm, 1982, Goldman, 1982). In actually, many women are assigned to jabs that will expose them to enemy attack, and this has been openly acknowledged by the top Pentagon officials (Women in combat-closer than you think, 1980). The United States Army has also recognized that women would be deployed in combat zones as an inevitable consequence of their assignments. This was confirmed in the following statement made by then Army Chief of Staff, General Bernad W. Rogers: Some people believe that women soldiers will not be deployed in the event of hostilities: that they are only to be part-time soldiers here in peace, gone in w ar. Women are an essential part of the force; they will deploy with their units and they will serve in the skills in which they have been trained (Holm, 1982, p. 286). It appears that the combat exclusion policy does not realistically exclude women from combat, and it seems the militarys reliance on women is increasing. Schneider (1988) conducted interviews with women in traditionally male jobs, asking them what they felt their status would become if a war broke out. In general, they believed that they could not and would not be removed in combat situation (p. 162). The following was taken from two of these interviews. Ive already asked, said a first flight engineer on a C-5, what happens if Im sitting on alert in Europe somewhere and something really happens? Does that mean that they dont have a legal crew anymore because the engineer cant go? A Coast Guard female lieutenant had this to say: I was the trained CIC officer, responsible for the combat information center. Along with a team of radar men, CIC must plot all enemy and friendly forces and advise the bridge of such things as incoming missiles. Im the one thats used to working with these guy s. That was the purpose of sending us through that simulated training, so that we could get used to working together as a team. What would they do? They couldnt just fly me off and stick somebody else in there (Schneider, 1988, p.162). .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 , .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .postImageUrl , .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 , .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9:hover , .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9:visited , .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9:active { border:0!important; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9:active , .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9 .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u96a5062ceff317d786e4a6fe131329d9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Constantinople as the eastern capital of the empir EssayIt appears that the United States military is in a position where women are so fully and flexibly involved in the organizational structure, that in a war, it would be very difficult to separate them out. Yet, there are those who feel those women are not physically and mentally capable of withstanding the effects of combat. There are many grounds on which this argument could be disputed; some are as follows. Women have contributed greatly in past wars. They have served in combat in many skills during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam (Holm, 1982). One study (Binkin Bath, 1977) found that many NATO and several WARSAW PA CT countries employed women in combat roles during World War II. Russia was reported as using military women on the front lines. In Israel, where they are actually conscripted, women have also experienced armed combat. Binkin and Bech (1977) found that in the first phase of Israels war of Liberation, one out of every five soldiers was female and they shared equality in both offensive and defensive battle situations (p. 134). Holm (1982) found that some 7,500 military women served in S.E. Asia during the Viet Nam War. She maintains that these women proved .the modern American military woman is fully capable of functioning effectively in a military role in a combat environment, even under direct hostile fire (p. 207). The United States Army has even conducted its own tests to examine the performance of individual units with women in the field, under simulated combat conditions (Goldman, 1982). The first test, labeled MAX-WAC studied women in three-day field exercise, and assessed their effect on unit performance. The second test, REF-WAC, studied women in thirty-day sustained combat related exercises during the NATO annual REFORGER exercises in Europe. The tests proved that women did not adversely impact unit performance. According to Goldman (1982), these tests provided a great deal of evidence that military women can perform on a par with their male peers; and in terms of their psychological that women are not inferior to men. In general, military women feel the argument that they are not fit for combat physically is irrelevant, as combat is no longer characterized by physical activity. The technological and industrial advances of the twentieth century have caused extensive changes in the nature of warfare (Goldman, Holm, 1982; Gilder, 1979). Due to this changing nature of warfare and military technology, .combat will no longer depend on bayonets and physical force rather on lasers, microprocessors and other sophisticated devices that gender obsolete the conventional images of battle (Gilder, 1979, p. 29). Clearly advanced technology requires a more highly educated workforce, and it has been maintained that military women do fit in such category. According to a back ground study on women in the military done by Commander Richard Hunter, one of the Pentagons leading experts on personnel matters, military women are better educated than military men and score higher on aptitude tests. He found that more than 90% of women recruits have high school diplomas, compared with only 60% of men, and women aptitude scores are approximately 20% higher than the men (Gilder, 1979). Women have clearly demonstrated their capabilities and their potential for future contributions to the military. Their most recent victory was achieved in the Persian Gulf War. There, women helicopter pilots participated in an air assault for first time. They were involved in airlifting the 101st Airborne into Iraq, in what has been called the largest helicopter action in military history (GI Jill deserves a shot at combat, 1991, p. 36). In general many feel that the experience of the Persian Gulf War has called for a new look at the ban on women in combat roles. Indeed, very recently the House Armed Services Committee took the first step toward abolishing the combat inclusion rule. They approved legislation authorizing the Pentagon to assign female pilots to fly fighter and bomber combat missions (GI Jill, 1991). Clearly, this will accelerate the trend already established toward eliminating womens combat exclusions. .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 , .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .postImageUrl , .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 , .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28:hover , .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28:visited , .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28:active { border:0!important; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28:active , .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28 .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9c5249c9b1c8a296f0d31360d9812c28:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A Time In History EssayAs public opinion is a force in shaping policy, the attitudes of the American public must also be considered. A national survey of 560 Americans aged eighteen to twenty-four conducted by the Gallup organization asked the following question concerning women in combat: If women are drafted, should they be required to take combat roles as men are, should they be given combat roles only if they volunteer for them, or should they not be eligible for them? (Goldman, 1982, p.284). The responses were as follows:MaleFemaleGiven Combat Roles As Men 12% 9%Only if Volunteer61% 74%Not Eligible26% 16%Clearly, the majority of the survey population, men and women al ike favored the inclusion of women in combat roles on a voluntary basis. A data analysis taken from a General Social Survey done in 1988 reveals similar liberal attitudes of general population regarding the role of women. When asked to respond to the statement, Women should take care of home, not country, it was shown that the majority, including both male and females respondents, disagreed with the statement. Overall, more women disagreed than men, but this could be explained by the fact that there were more women in survey population than men. Yet overall, there were also more women who agreed than there was men; strikingly the percentages show that men are more likely to disagree with the statement than women are. The same results were seen when the question Should women work was asked. Clearly, it has been demonstrated that women are a valuable resource to the military. Women are thoroughly integrated into the armed forces, and they are now so dependent on women that it would be virtually impossible to go into combat without them. In large part, women have already proved themselves. One needs only look at their role in past wars. Regardless of the combat exclusion rule, women have served in combat roles throughout out history and it is inevitable that they will need for future combat roles. War has become much more diverse in the skills it demands. Today, combat is as much a matter of technical expertise, as physical strength. This increase in skill requirements further signifies the militarys need for all dependence on women; they are currently serving in highly technical roles. Along with the changing role of women in the military, American attitudes a nature and roles of women in our society are also changing. Polls and statistics have shown that there is a clear tendency toward liberalization in terms of womens roles. Indeed, the majority of American believes women should be allowed into combat roles if they are willing. In general, the use of women in essentially combat environments has been considered successfully, and will certainly have implications for their future roles. It may take some time for liberal policies to be implemented but the preliminary groundwork has been laid. In light of the Persian Gulf War, the first significant steps have already been taken toward allowing military women to serve in combat roles. Bibliography:Bach, S., Binkin, M. (1977). The Auto Pact was an agreement constructed by Pierre Trudeau in 1965 that allowed companies to bring auto parts and vehicles from anywhere in the world into Canada without any tariff, but with two conditions. One condition was a requirement of commitment to jobs in Canada, manufacturers had to produce one car in Canada for everyone they sold. They also had to maintain a Canadian Value Added (CVA), which basically means no depreciation on Canadian made machinery and that parts in assembly were also made in Canada. Automotive trade markets are among the most open in the world. They maintain no tariff barriers. This treaty kept North America happy however; the overseas companies were left with the shorter end of the stick. This caused the fall of the Auto Pact. The Auto Pact is too important to Canada, and Canada will suffer extreme losses.(reword) (give the main points) The 1965 Auto Pact is Canadas most successful trade agreement. We should be kissing his ass, says the wise yet youthful Jon Cooper as he refers to Trudeaus ingenious scheme. It is a building block of Canada. Since signing the Auto Pact, the Canadian automotive industry has enjoyed enormous growth. Production and automotive manufacturing employment have increased 200% and automotive shipments grew from $2.2 billion in 1964 to $70.5 billion in 1995. The main two focuses of Trudeaus were exports and employment. Trudeau increased the automotive sales from a once scarce Canadian industry into its top export. His other concern, creating employment doubled. Without the Auto Pact enforcing these numbers they will fall. The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) president Buzz Hargrove said at the Caw Joint Council meeting in December 2000 that the Auto Pact was: A trading pact that has meant so much to the growth of the... centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-71605851149987596542019-11-23T19:30:00.001-08:002019-11-23T19:30:04.142-08:00mythological illusions Essay Examplemythological illusions Essay Example mythological illusions Essay mythological illusions Essay Essay Topic: Beauty and the Beast and Other Tales Durfee AP LIT 4th 19 sept 2012 Achilles Mythological Allusions BartleBy. com Achilles story begins when a prophesy is made about Troy. The only way to capture it, would be if the Greeks had Achilles help. Thetis, Achilles mother knew that if Achilles went into this battle, he would die. So she dipped him in the purest of waters by holding his heel. Then sent young Achilles to Scyros where he was hidden away and disguised as a girl. Eventually, Achilles was caught by Odysseus and agreed to go off with Odysseus to Troy. Once at Troy, Achilles was an invincible warrior. Along the ay, Achilles captured many towns in the Trojan territory. In the midst of the war, Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks, was forced by an oracle of Apollo to give up Chryseis, his own prize. He then proceeded to take Briseis from Achilles to make up for his loss. This was the central plot of the Iliad. After Briseis was taken, Achilles was enraged and refused to fght. From there on out, the war turned in the Trojans favor. Thetis gave Achilles new armor made by Hephaestus, and he returned to the war and slayed Hector. Achilles the proceeded to drag the body behind his chariot in front of Troy and refused to allow Hectors body to be properly buried. When King Priam secretly entered into the Greek camp to plead for the body, Achilles gave in and allowed him to take the body. This is one of the more intriguing parts of the Iliad as Achilles showed complete respect for Priam was the enemy. From there, Achilles went defeated many enemies and fought until finally Paris, with help from Apollo, shot Achilles with a poison arrow in the one place where he was vulnerable his heel. Commentary: This of course is where we get the expression Achilles Heel basically meaning your weakness. No matter how great you may be, youll always have a weakness, your Achilles Heel. In literature, Achilles is portrayed all over. In the television series Class of the Titans, one of the seven heroes, Archie, is descended from Achilles and has inherited both his vulnerable heel and part of his invincibility. Agamemnon Agamemnon, king of Argos, was the son of Atreus, king of Mycenae, and his wife Aerope and was the brother of Menelaus. After Atreus was murdered by his nephew Aegisthus, Agamemnon and Menelaus took refuge with Tyndareus, king of Sparta, whose daughters, Clytemnestra and Helen, they married. By Clytemnestra, Agamemnon had a son, Orestes, and three daughters, Iphigeneia, Electra, and recovered his fathers kingdom. When Paris, prince of Troy, carried off Helen, Agamemnon called on the princes of the country to unite in a war of revenge against the Trojans. He himself furnished 100 ships and was chosen commander in chief of the combined forces. The fleet was ready to set sail, but was prevented winds that were sent by the goddess Artemis because Agamemnon offended her. To appease the wrath of Artemis, Agamemnon was forced to sacrifice his own daughter Iphigeneia. After the capture of Troy, Cassandra, Paris sister, fell to Agamemnons ot in the distribution of the prizes of war. On his return he landed in Argolis, where Aegisthus had seduced Agamemnons wife, and carried out the murders of Agamemnon, his comrades, and Cassandra. As a form of revenge, Orestes murdered Clytemnestra and Aegisthus. Commentary: In most works of literature, illusions of Agamemnon are often seen as ruthless rulers and or emperors of false anger. Genesis 1 Biblical Allusions Genests 1: 1-50 In the beginning there was no earth or sky or sea or animals. And then God spoke in the darkness: Let there be light! And right away there was light. God said, From ow on, when its dark it will be night and when its light, it will be day. Then nighttime came and the night passed and then the light came back again. That was the first day. On the second day, God made the earth and over it He hung a sky. And the second day was over. The next morning God looked around and thought, the e arth needs to be a bit more organized. So, He put all the water in one place and all the dry land in another. When He finished that, God made plants to cover the land. Flowers and trees and grasses started to grow. Its looking great, said God and that was the end of the third day. On the fourth day, God looked around and thought, the daylight still needs a bit more work and the night is Just too dark. So, He made the sun to light the sky during the day and the moon and stars to add light to the night. He hung them in the sky and stepped back to look at his work. The next day, God looked at the water and created birds to fly over, and fish to swim inside. And that was the end of the fifth day. On the sixth day, God added animals to the land. He added everything from ants to zebras to the land. But He still felt something was missing. So God added Mankind to enjoy and take care of all that He ad created. After six days, the whole universe was completed. On the seventh day God had a nice long rest and enjoyed looking at all He had made. Commentary: The story of creation is over used in modern and literature of the past. Also the phrase Let there be Light! is often adopted by people of power in works of literature. The Nativity: Mathew I, Luke I Mathew Luke 1: 1-80 While Mary was still engaged to Joseph, she miraculously became pregnant through the Holy Spirit, as foretold to her by the angel Gabriel. When Mary told Joseph she was pregnant, he had every right to feel disgraced, and Joseph could ave divorced her under Jewish law, and under said law, Mary could have been put to death via stoning, but he didnt. God sent him a message via a dream and he became a rather supportive Earthly father for Jesus. Far away in the East, some men saw a new in the sky. They studied their scrolls where it said that whenever a bright new star appeared it meant that a ruler had been born. The Wise Men decided to find this new ruler. They went to Jerusalem to see King Herod, because they thought the baby would be in the palace. They asked to see the child that would be King of the Jews. The king was confused and thought this new king may take away is throne. He told them to return when they had found the baby so that he could worship the child himself. The men set off to find the baby. They were guided by the star to the stable in Bethlehem. Here they knelt down and worshipped Jesus. Joseph had a dream where an angel told him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt because King Herod had ordered that Jesus be killed. They left Bethlehem right away. When the men did not return, Herod ordered that all male children in Bethlehem be killed. They did not find Jesus. Commentary: The story of Nativity is alluded whenever a great birth of power is in effect. Beauty and the Beast Fairytales Bartleby. com A merchant lived in a mansion with his three daughters, who were all beautiful, except for one, who was more beautiful than the rest. Belle, age fourteen was a very sweet girl. When her father claimed he was travelling, she asked him to bring home a rose. He promised he would, so he traveled and was lost in a forest. In the forest, he found a castle. Inside, there was food and gifts, of which the merchant thought was for him. He ate the food and then found a rose. When he went to go pick up the rose, a beast came and told him that he was going to die. The merchant begged for his life, nd explained that the rose was for his daughter. The beast then said that he would be his prisoner, or hed have to trade with his daughter. His daughter traded places with her father and she became the beasts prisoner. Every night, the beast would ask if shed marry him, and every night shed say no. Eventually, the two fell in love and when she kissed him, he transformed into Prince Adam. Commentary: This story tells that love and beauty come in all shapes and sizes. And that no matter how you look, youd still be able to find love. Antigone was the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. After Oedipus left the throne, is two sons, Eteocles and Polynices, agreed to rule Thebes in alternate years. Eteocles, at the end of his first year of rule, went back on his word and refused to step down. Polynices then raised an army of traditional enemies of Thebes and led them against his city. The battle ends with the defeat of the invading army, but Eteocles and Polynices are both dead, killed by each others hand. Creon, who now assumes power in Thebes, declares that, as he was the protector of the city, Eteocles body will be properly buried, but Polynices, because he attacked the city, will be left unburied on the battlefield. Antigone decides she must disobey, arguing that a law of man which violates religious law is no law at all. She performs a ceremonial burial and demands that she will herself be buried by being sealed in a cave. Creons son, Haemon, however, is betrothed to Antigone, and protests her sentence and lectures his father on wise leadership. Creon refuses to change his mind. When the prophet Tiresias informs Creon that the gods are angry with his pronouncement concerning Polynices, he finally relents, but too late. When the cave is opened to retrieve Antigone, she has already hung herself. In his grief and anger, Haemon tries to kill Creon. He fails, and then kills himself instead. When he returned to the palace, Creon also learns that his wife, Eurydice, killed herself too when she heard what had happened. Finally, Creon is ruler over an orderly city, but he has lost everything. Antigone is Just a girl who wanted fairness and equality. She felt sorrow for Polynices because his brother was the one who betrayed the sacred promise and religious law. Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty. Aphrodite is the wife of the lame and ugly god of fire, Hephaestus. Among her lovers was Ares, god of war, who eventually became her husband. She was the rival of Persephone, queen of the underworld, for the love of the beautiful Greek youth Adonis. Eris, the goddess of discord, was the only goddess not invited to the wedding of King Peleus and the Thetis, and she was so angry, that she threw a golden apple into their wedding arrangement. When Zeus refused to Judge between the three goddesses who claimed the apple, Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, they asked Paris, prince of Troy, to make the award. Each offered him a bribe: Hera, that he would be a powerful ruler; Athena, that he would achieve great military fame; and Aphrodite, that he should have the fairest woman in the world. Paris selected Aphrodite as the fairest and chose as his prize Helen of Troy, the wife of the Greek king Menelaus. Pariss abduction of Helen led to the Trojan War. Commentary: In Homers Iliad Aphrodite is said to be the daughter of Zeus and Dione, a Titan goddess. Other stories tell how she sprang, full-grown, from the foam of the sea near the island Cythera. From there Zephyrus, the west wind, carried her on a shell to Cyprus, which was always regarded as her real home. There the Hours met her, gave her clothes, and brought her to the gods. Every god even Zeus himself wanted this beautiful, golden goddess as his wife. Aphrodite was too proud and rejected them all. To punish her, Zeus gave her to Hephaestus (Vulcan in Roman mythology), the lame and ugly god of the forge. This good-natured craftsman built her a splendid palace on Cyprus. Aphrodite soon left him for Ares (Mars), the handsome god of war. One of their children was Eros (Cupid), the winged god of love. The Fall: Genesis 3 Genests 3: [1-10] A snake comes to Eve and convinces her to eat from the forbidden tree. The woman listens to the serpent and eats from it. She also brings some to Adam and he eats as well. Knowing theyVe sinned, they hide in the garden until God comes. Adam blames Eve. Eve blames the serpent. God curses the serpent and promises a savior to come and crush the serpents head. Women must now endure much pain during childbirth. They will also be ruled over by their husbands. Men must now tool and work to produce food. All people will now have to die. God clothes them and forces them out of the garden. An angel with a flaming sword is placed at the garden gate to prevent anyone from returning and eating of the Tree of Life. Commentary: The story of Adam and Eve has been told so many times by thousands of works of literature. Music, Art, Books, there are too many to name. However, IVe never known hat in the original story, God punishes women via childbirth for Eves sin. Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha, were friends of Jesus. When Lazarus was sick, his sisters sent a message to Jesus, Lord, the one you love is sick. When Jesus heard the news, he waited two more days before going to Lazarus hometown of Bethany. And when Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been dead and in the tomb for four days. When Martha discovered that Jesus was on his way, she went out to meet him. Jesus told Martha, Your brother will rise again. But Martha thought he was talking about the final resurrection of the dead. Then Jesus said these important words: l am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Martha then went and told Mary that Jesus wanted to see her. Jesus had not yet entered the village, most likely to avoid stirring up the crowd and calling attention to himself. The town of Bethany was not far from Jerusalem where the Jewish leaders were against Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus with Mary, Martha and the rest of the Jesus. mourners. There he asked them to remove the stone that covered the hillside burial place. Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed to his Father, closing with these words: Lazarus, come out! When Lazarus came out of the tomb, Jesus told the people to remove his grave clothes. Commentary: Through the raising of Lazarus, Jesus showed the believers, and the world, that he had power over death. Many believed that Jesus was the Son of God and they put their faith in him after seeing this miracle. Cinderella After the father married the evil stepmother, the stepmother murdered him for his cash, and then used his daughter [Cinderella] as the slave of the house and spoiled her own two daughters with the cash. They practically starved the daughter and every day after she was done with her work, all she had for warmth were the cinders left in the fire place, which is where she got the nickname Cinderella because shed sleep next to the cinders. If she didnt do something fast enough, shed be whipped, just like a slave. Sometimes to earn extra money, because they could never have enough, the stepmother would rent out her daughter much like a prostitute. She was took pity on her. One day the prince held a ball and invited all the maidens in the city, except Cinderella, because the stepmother made sure no one knew she existed. Cinderella was forced to prepare her stepsisters for the ball, and if she did something wrong (like mess up their hair, slightly smudge their makeup, tie something too tight, etc. ) then shed be whipped and slapped. Eventually after the two stepsisters left for the ball and the mother left with them, Cinderella was finally alone in the house and currently did not have to do chores if she didnt want to, so she Just sat down and cried from all the pain her life caused her. The ghost of her father showed up from her tears and sat beside her, along with the ghost of her birth mother as well who had died while she was very young. Together, the spirits magically sewed together a beautiful gown for Cinderella and they healed all her scars and put makeup on her to cover her bruises and she looked absolutely beautiful. The spirits turned a pumpkin into a wondrous coach and some mice into horses and they sent her off to the ball, warning her that the magic would wear off at midnight. At the ball, everyone thought she looked absolutely stunning. But off course, since no one knew Cinderella existed, no one knew who she was. Her beauty even stunned the stepsisters and step mother and they didnt recognize her. Everyone thought she was a princess from some other kingdom. The prince was mesmerized and asked her to dance with him and they fell in love. However, the clock began to chime midnight and she quickly ran off with only a small goodbye to the prince, telling him he would never see her again. As she ran down to her enchanted coach, one of her glass slippers fell off and she tripped, but she quickly regained her footing and scrambled into the coach, which immediately set off. The prince ran down after her with her slipper which he picked up and tried to call her back so he could return it to her, but shed left out of sight. Once the stepsisters and tepmother returned home and they saw Cinderella in her rags sitting on the floor, she was violently beaten for not doing her chores. Over the next few months the prince traveled the kingdom and even out to other lands to try to find Cinderella, saying whoevers foot fit the slipper she left would be his princess. But like I said before, no one knew she existed, and when he described her, no one could tell him where she lived or who she was. He stopped by her house once, as well, but the stepmother had locked her away in her room. The stepsisters tried to fit their giant feet in the slipper but it was impossible. After a while the prince had even put out a reward for whoever could name his princess, and of course the stepmother was enthusiastic about money, so she planned to bring Cinderella to him and collect the money, but then she would murder her afterwards and say shed had a terrible disease that the stepsisters also shared, and they were very poor and if they had enough money to afford medicine then her two other daughters could be saved, so she would collect donations from the kingdom for more money. However, after Cinderella married the prince she told him about her stepmothers plan and she was caught in the act. She was later hung for murdering the father and for attempted murder of Cinderella. The two stepsisters were banned from the kingdom for torturing Cinderella. Commentary: her name actually came from the cinders she slept by, and I suppose you could say she and the prince lived happily ever after once all the death and money was out of the way. Atlas The story of Atlas tells a Titan whose punishment after the battle between the Gods, was to lift the sky forever and eternity. One day, Hercules came to see Atlas for some help finding some Golden Apples. Atlas, bearer of the sky, knew exactly where hey were, and knowing that Hercules was immensely strong, told him to hold the sky for a few hours while Atlas went to fetch the Golden Apples. When Atlas came back with the apples, Hercules complained and said, Who would come back to such a Job like this? Atlas knew he could run away and forever be free. But Hercules tricked him and said to hold up the sky for a quick second while he put a pad on his shoulder. As soon as Atlas held the sky again, Hercules ran away, along with the Golden Apples. The Story of Atlas isnt very known. However through this assignment, Ive learned that maps have adopted the name Atlas from Mythology. Atlas, being the bearer of the Sky, knows where everything is. It only makes sense to call an atlas after Atlas. Cupid and Psyche Venuss son Cupid (or Eros) is the God of Love. He is the one responsible for the relationships that take place on Earth. One day, Venus was enraged by the beauty of Psyche, a mortal, and demanded Eros go to her room, and shoot her with one of his Golden Arrows and Venus would place a beast in her room. As soon as he went to her room, she woke up, and Eros scratched himself with one of his arrows, causing him to fall deeply in love with her. Enraged, Venus made it so that shed never fall in love with anyone. As payback, Eros stopped shooting his Golden Arrows, forcing the world to turn vile and old, also causing Venus power to shrivel. Venus eventually gave in, but her curse still stayed with Psyche. Cupid eventually broke the curse, and was able to fall deeply in love with her. I never knew that Cupids real name was Eros, and I also had no idea that Cupid was capable of loving someone. I thought he was Just unlovable, and that was why he made everyone else fall in love. Noah was a good man who lived with unbelievers/extremely ungodly. God saw the evil and told Noah to build a great ark for the animals (two of each; male and emale) and his family. Anyone who would see him build the ark and believe could come aboard and be saved from the flood, but no one did. It took many years to build and they had plenty of time to believe. They were warned, but only mocked and so they perished in the flood. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights. When it was over God put the rainbow in the sky and told Noah this was a symbol of His promise never to destroy the whole earth with a flood again. Noah and his family came out of the ark onto dry ground and worshiped God immediately. The Story of Noah and the Ark is well known through literature. It is also portrayed in ovies such as Evan Almighty, where Evan is given the same task as Noah was, except more modernized. The Last Supper John 13 Mark 14 The Last Supper tells the story of how Jesus brings together the disciples and eats together with them. During the supper, Jesus holds up a piece of bread from a loaf and claims, This is my body which I have given for you, Eat it! And he does so again with the wine, This is my blood from which I have given up for you, Drink it! however, the moral is the same. The purpose of the Last Supper was to introduce the sacrament, and it is practiced every Sunday by all Christians. centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-18936282487356223442019-11-21T05:41:00.001-08:002019-11-21T05:41:15.539-08:00The Tea Party. This is owing to the fact that he openly opposed the mortgage plan that was signed by the President after taking office in 2009 on air and this fuelled many protesters and groups to gather and initiate this movement. Different support groups of the Tea Party formed and worked throughout the country to present their points (Williamson et al 25, 37). The Tea Party laid a great initial impact on the political landscape of the United States owing to the great support that it received but the affectivity of the movement has greatly reduced over the years owing to the lack of proper leadership and unity as well as the changing manifestos. In the year 2009, the support for the Tea Party greatly increased and polls revealed that up to 300,000 residents of the United States took part in the organized protests. Different organization s registered under the flag of Tea Party to show their support for this movement. These included The Tea Party Nation, Tea Party Patriots, The Tea Party Express and the Tea Party Nation. Such was the success of the Tea Party and its motif that by the end of the year 2009, political candidates who were associated with the Tea Party won 39 out of the total 129 seats of the United States House of Representatives and five seats in the Senate. These victories clearly demonstrated the political effect of the Tea Party on the American political landscape (Williamson et al 37, 38). The motives for which this movement began were mainly to reduce the federal government and at the same fight against the loopholes in the healthcare policies. The Tea Party also lobbied against the high amount of taxes and the mortgage plan and also demanded the resolving of issues including unemployment as well as the lower level of representation of the common public in the government (Gabriel; Williamson et al 32). The groups that formed under the flag of the Tea Party indicate the fact that they are mainly putting forward ââ¬Å"the voice of the true owners of the United Statesâ⬠that is of the residents of the country. They indicate that they are following in the footsteps of the people who brought about the revolution known as the Boston Tea Party in the year 1773 and thus they refer to their movement as the Tea Party as well. They indicate the fact that they are fighting for their country and fulfilling the dreams of the founding fathers of the United States and trying to uphold the constitution of the country. They argue that the Constitution is to be truly followed and the freedom of the people is not to be invaded by the governing bodies. They present the fact that the common man should be represented in the governing offices so that their problems are properly solved. Furthermore, they also argue that illegal immigrants should not be allowed to enter the country and proper b udgeting schemes should be devised for the benefits of the common man and taxes should be reduced to minimum (The Tea Party). The Tea Party movement has been a center of controversy. It has its own supporters but opposing groups present the fact that the success of the Tea Party is not very high and it has greatly reduced over the years. Furthermore, it is also explained by the oppositionists that the Tea Party does not represent all the people of the country but it rather represents only a few groups and races. This was indicated by a survey that was conducted by the CBS News and the New York Times. This survey was conducted in the year centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-11359404009873132932019-11-20T04:16:00.001-08:002019-11-20T04:16:03.990-08:00How to manage a country Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 wordsHow to manage a country - Essay Example There is dire need for establishment of various research projects in China that would focus on management of domestic e-waste through lifecycle analysis of electronic products and modern treatment technologies (Wang et al., 49). According to survey done by StEP in the year 2012, the government of China is expected to play a pivotal role in the planning, organizing, regulating, monitoring and implementation of different formal collection and recycling of e-waste initiatives within the country. The support from the government is necessary for the purposes of influence and development of e-waste recycling industry. Additionally, there is need to consider some of the most critical issues related to environmental e-waste management such as establishment of collection channels, designing rules safeguarding legislation and subsidies, establishing appropriate conditions on recycling standards and license management. However, the efficiency in e-waste management can be achieved through cooperation from international organizations that assists in establishment of state-of-the-art technologies in treatment and appropriate management strategies and policies. Moreover, the government requires heavy investment in scienti fic research that plays important role in definition of problem and assessment of the impacts (Wang et al., 49). There has been illegal export of e-waste to China and this has led to overwhelming consequences on available e-waste recycling sites within the country. Therefore, this calls for elaborate understanding of the quantities and flows of different used electronics within the country. Therefore, the initiative on e-waste management is necessary for the country since there is unclear channel concerning the amount of e-waste generated in China and inflows from international field, and their ultimate destinations. Understanding of the material flows and various actors within formal and informal sector is crucial to ensure efficiency centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5946577487923663878.post-3760252234012198982019-11-17T16:47:00.001-08:002019-11-17T16:47:06.784-08:00Animal Rights Opinion Essay Essay Example for Free Animal Rights Opinion Essay Essay To have a liable viewpoint on the topic of Animal Rights, one must practically have the abilities of a well-practiced philosopher. You must be able to fully evaluate the characteristics of every possible relationship, good or bad, between man and his fellow members of the Animal Kingdom, and their potential outcomes. You must also decide if you believe in human exceptionalism, that is, whether or not we are equal to animals. ââ¬Å"A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. â⬠Says Ingrid Newkirk, head of PETA, in 2003, ââ¬Å"They are all mammalsâ⬠. Other individuals, however, such as Wesley J. Smith (2010), believe that this attitude will devalue the ââ¬Å"the unique status of humansâ⬠. Everyone has their own take on this topic, and, if we resolve this in a civilized and orderly fashion, we can potentially have a perfect balance between humans and the worldââ¬â¢s diverse flora and fauna. Across the globe, there are hundreds of organizations that are constantly fighting for the equality of animals, and the elimination of their mistreatment. Some of the bigger names include the World Wildlife Fund, (WWF), and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). These groups rally, lobby, and petition against criminal acts against practically every species of animal, and believe you me they have their hands full! In some laboratories, primates are being rigorously forced through difficult tests, and on some farming facilities belonging to todayââ¬â¢s big corporations, such as the large restaurant chain known as Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), animals are being harvested in an inhumane manner. Among the worst cases is the solicitation of ââ¬Å"crush filmsâ⬠, in which puppies and small, cute animals are ââ¬Å"slowly crushed or impaled by women wearing heels,â⬠reports David Michael (2010). These videos were banned in 1999 by the Supreme Court, until the federal law had overreached, and the law was overturned. These acts are clear examples of cruelty towards animals, and can never be truly justified. If we take the rights steps, in a warranted and honest manner, then we can stop animal abuse, and save future species from an unruly and unjustified future as slaves to man-kind. There also exists a whole other group of people who believe that life is just a game of the survival of the fittest, which is similar to the point of view of Wesley J. Smith, author of A Rat Is a Pig Is a Dog Is a Boy: Theà Human Cost of the Animal Rights Movement. He, and many others, believe that ââ¬Å"valuing humans over animals is a form of discriminationâ⬠against humans, which he describes in his new book published in 2010. He also tells us that giving animals the same legal status takes away from who we are, as the dominant species of Earth. I personally, do not believe this is completely true. We moved these creatures out of their homes to build our houses and buildings, and then polluted them with the carbon outputs of our cities and towns. This makes it our responsibility to help them find new homes any way we can. On the other hand, he did mention something I could partially relate to. ââ¬Å"Humans do indeed have a moral obligation to promote animal welfare, but they are also entitled to use animals, particularly if the use of animals alleviates human suffering.â⬠I can get behind this statement to some extent. There are hundreds of scientists using animals to research possible cures for certain diseases that affect thousands of humans daily. However, harming these animals would be completely unacceptable. We could use alternative solutions, like observing animals in their natural habitats, if possible, and study them there, or at least let them go, unharmed, after the experiment is completed. Although many groups and individuals are taking the right steps to put an end to this epidemic, not everyone likes to play by the rules. There have been numerous cases of arson, theft, and animal right activists terrorizing companies that test on animals. In fact, ââ¬Å"fifty-one out of fifty-eight of the incidents of domestic terrorism identified in the FBIââ¬â¢s report Terrorism 2002-2005 were suspected to have been perpetrated by animal rights activists,â⬠claims Smith (2010). ââ¬Å"Which is surprisingly violent for its (animal rights movement) allegedly non-violent goals,â⬠agrees David Michael (2010). Some of the more extreme cases include lighting entire laboratories on fire, death threats, and, in 2007, a researcherââ¬â¢s children being sent HIV-infected needles in the mail. Even PETA is not completely innocent of such acts. In 1995, they donated over $45 000 to the defense funds of Rodney Coronado, who was guilty of burning down a Michigan State laboratory. PETA finds these are ââ¬Å"acceptable crimesâ⬠¦when used for the animal cause,â⬠says Alex Pacheco, a co-founder of PETA. They also compared animal cruelty to the Holocaust in one of their many campaigns, to get their message across crystal clear, which offended many members of the public, and therefore raised many eyebrows. I believe that we must find wasà to eliminate animal abuse with this ââ¬Ëmilitaristicââ¬â¢ component. In conclusion, I believe that, a long time ago, before man first started his evolutionary track, a balance of rights and respect between our kind and the rest of the worldââ¬â¢s fauna existed. However, as we evolved, this balance shifted into our favor. We became the dominant exception in the Animal Kingdom, removing inferior species from their homes, either by enslaving or killing them. This behavior is unacceptable, and must be stopped, because of its excessive injustice towards animals. I also believe that organizations like PETA are on the right track. In order to make change, we have to fight for it, but to certain extents. Arson and burglary are deplorable, and will only make the problem even worse. We must deal with these issues in a civilized and organized manner. Burning laboratories simply wonââ¬â¢t do. Once these steps are taken, and if we are able to treat animals with the respect and value, we will be able to coexist in harmony with the rest of the Animal Kingdom, and the balance we once had can be restored. This book takes place in Mexico during the nineteen hundreds in the city of La Paz. à à à à à The main characters are Kino an Indian pearl diver who finds the magnificent pearl and whose life is partially destroyed by this pearl. Juana is Kino's wife and faithful partner and she is obedient and devoted to her family. Coyotito is Kino and Juana's infant son he is bitten by a scorpion and recovers miraculously only to be later killed by a bullet. à à à à à The theme of this book is not to let greed or money to get in the way of you or your family. Greed is a destructive force and if not controlled it will effect you a lot maybe even forever, like the death of Kinoââ¬â¢s son Coyotito. Another theme is fate because fate was a major aspect to why Kino did not succeed in his dreams of having a luxurious life. When Kino discovered the Pearl he thought that it would take him out of poverty and into a life of happiness. The pearl was not meant for anyone to find, and the finding of one was luck, ââ¬Å"a little pat on the back by God.â⬠à à à à à à à à à à The problem in this story is that Kino is trying to sell his pearl and every one bids a low price. That means he keeps it longer and everyone is trying to steal it from him. The conflict is man vs. man the reason why is that a lot of people are trying to steal it from him the day he got it. It went to the point that people were tracking him for it and attacking him in his sleep. à à à à à I hated it when Kino went pearl diving and found the ââ¬Å"pearl of the world,â⬠and started making a scene. When you find something very valuable like that you keep that a secret and under ground. When you make a discovery with something valuable like that you do not deal in front of an audience you do it privately. centcentdesperch1973http://www.blogger.com/profile/04319841121276512879noreply@blogger.com0
